Leela Palace Kempinski
By Barbara Kingstone
Leela Palace Kempinski in this iconic city is celebrating the newest luxury hotel to debut in seven years. Udaipur, a city on a lake in India’s Rajasthan, has announced India’s first ESPA. Set amidst flowering guava trees, the spa is comprised of nine traditional Rajasthani tents, several with huge marble soaking tubs. Treatments fuse the latest scientific advances in European wellness with therapies from India’s ancient art of healing, Ayurveda.
Set on the banks of beautiful Lake Pichola and offering captivating views of this romantic heritage city and the surrounding Aravili Mountains, The Leela Palace Kempinski Udaipur is a palatial modern showpiece. The five-star property has 80 luxurious rooms and suites, two restaurants, a lounge, a bar and a stunning outdoor swimming pool.
The ESPA at The Leela opened in February 2010. A fitness center has all the latest equipment and personal trainers and daily yoga classes are also offered. Inspired by the art and architecture of Rajasthan, renowned architect Bill Bensley and interior designer Jeffrey Wilkes crowned the roof with huge domes and decorated doors with corbel arches. The interior courtyard is embellished with mosaics of peacocks and the Tree of Life. Inside, shimmering light reflects off the thikri, the traditional Mewari mosaics of mirrors, enhancing the Rajasthani ambiance.
The long swimming pool lies between fragrant landscaped gardens. Guest rooms – all with views of Lake Pichola – measure an average 580 square feet. The design is contemporary with traditional elements of Rajasthani artistry. Exquisite fabrics are embroidered with regally-inspired designs and carved wood furniture has mother of pearl inlays and brass tarkashi work.
